Petgoods products are safe and nutricios

Health

2025-02-26

We understand that recent media coverage, regarding elevated levels of glycoalkaloids and questioned nutritional content, has caused concern. We would therefore like to emphasize that all Petgood products, including the recalled batch, are considered safe and nutritious.

In December, we chose to stop sales of one batch of our dry food Premium Adult Dog after an external test showed elevated levels of glycoalkaloids, a naturally occurring compound found in potatoes. As a direct response, we decided to recall the affected batch (best before: 2026-07), which was sold between March and June 2025, and informed affected customers directly.

After becoming aware of the test results, we have carried out extensive analyses and maintained close dialogue with both our production partners and relevant authorities, including the Swedish Board of Agriculture and the Finnish counterpart supervisory authority, the Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto).

All Petgood products, including the recalled batch, are considered safe and nutritious.

At the same time, we want to be transparent that the glycoalkaloid levels were higher than desirable. However, this does not mean that the food is toxic.

Our production partner has more than 20 years of experience in manufacturing pet food and produces more than 20,000 tonnes of feed containing potatoes annually. They handle over 1,500 tonnes of potato-based raw materials per year and have no documented cases where glycoalkaloids have caused illness in dogs or cats. Production takes place in accordance with applicable EU legislation for animal feed manufacturing and under strict quality standards.

It is also important to highlight that the product’s nutritional value and protein quality are of high standard. This is confirmed in external tests, where both the nutritional content receives high ratings and the protein quality achieves top scores. This is also in line with current research in the field.

There are currently no legally established EU maximum limits for glycoalkaloids in dog food. EFSA has indicated that levels above 100 mg/kg may warrant further analysis, but this is a guideline, not a safety limit.

The latest production of Premium Adult Dog currently on the market has confirmed levels of approximately 50 mg/kg glycoalkaloids in the finished product.

We have taken several measures to further strengthen quality and control throughout the supply chain, including stricter procedures, clearly defined target levels, and expanded testing.
We have also made a strategic decision to completely exclude potatoes from all future productions of our dry food, in order to further minimize variability in raw materials.
