Tightened quality procedures to ensure low levels of glycoalkaloids

Health

Product safety and our customers' trust are our top priority. At Petgood, we take quality and the health of our pets very seriously. We are therefore now taking a number of measures to ensure low levels of glycoalkaloids in products that have potatoes as an ingredient. At the same time, it is important to remember that no cases of sick dogs have been recorded

There are currently no limits set in EU legislation for the maximum content of glycoalkaloids in dog food. The EU has detailed lists of undesirable substances with strict limits, but potato glycoalkaloids are not included in that list for feed. Instead of legal limits for glycoalkaloids, EFSA, the EU’s independent scientific body, has recommended that levels of glycoalkaloids in potatoes and processed potato products exceeding 100 mg/kg may lead to analysis. This level is a guideline, not a safety level or a legal limit.

After levels that did not comply with these guidelines were found in one of our batches in late December, we have taken a number of different measures. We immediately began a thorough investigation and sent raw materials to an external accredited laboratory for analysis.

We have now defined clear target levels based on relevant recommendations and are ensuring that these are integrated throughout the supply and production chain. This includes updated raw material specifications, strengthened controls on incoming raw materials, clear control in recipes and production, and regular verification of the finished product through tests according to an established test plan. We also ensure structured documentation and reporting from our production partners, so that follow-up is ongoing and transparent. Any identified gaps against recommendations will be addressed through clear action plans and incorporated into our ongoing quality and follow-up processes.

At the same time, it is important to remember that no cases of sick dogs have been recorded. According to our production partners, who work with the most trusted quality systems, the food is safe for our dogs. We are also in close dialogue with the Swedish Board of Agriculture. As a precautionary measure, we nevertheless chose to stop sales of the relevant batch at the end of December. The relevant batch was withdrawn from the shelves and affected customers were immediately contacted with the request to throw away products from the relevant batch, marked with best before 2026-07, for replacement or refund.

We are proud to pioneer the science-based development of insect-based pet food. Together with leading universities and research partners, Petgood’s veterinary team is driving research forward into the health benefits of insect protein. As a small company looking to change the market, our customers’ trust and the well-being of our pets are our most important focus. We will continue to do everything we can to meet our customers’ high expectations.
