Clicker training is an effective method for teaching your dog new things. It is not really a method, but more a tool you use, so-called clicks, when learning together with positive reinforcement (e.g. dog candy).
What is a clicker?
A clicker can be a small box with a metal plate or a plastic box with a button on it. How loud it sounds differs, and you should choose a clicker that caters to your individual needs and preferences. If you have a dog that is sound sensitive, a clicker that sounds less is preferable. Some research is needed to find the right one!
How do you clicker train?
Clicker training is performed by clicking on the clicker when your dog exhibits the desired behaviour, and then immediately reward them with a piece of candy. Thus, you are teaching your dog to associate the clicking sound with something really yummy coming! You train the behaviour by clicking on the clicker, and then immediately rewarding your four-legged companion. This must be repeated a couple of times, followed by a short pause. After a series of repetitions, a positive connection is usually formed! Sometimes it can take a day or two. Then, as soon as your dog associates the clicking sound with something good on its way, you can use it as a tool in teaching your animals new tricks.
